The Newport Foundation, Inc. (foun-da'-shon) n. "The basis on which a thing stands, or is supported; an underlying support." In 1994 a handful of persons came together to create a holistic care service, person focused, open to conventional and alternative health practices, sensitive to the local human habitat, and with widespread community involvement. Our first project was the purchase and complete renovation and addition to a small health care center, Bickford in Windsor Locks, CT. It is the flagship model of our personal commitment and involvement.

From that project evolved Chariots of Hope Inc. which recycles and renovates unused wheelchairs, providing them free to persons in need here and around the world. It gives mobility, new life and hope to persons fighting despair.

Most recently, Newport with Chariots of Hope created Connecticut Sled Hockey Inc., to form the first "sled hockey" teams for physically challenged adults and youth in the state. Sled hockey is the only sport for players with physical challenges that utilizes the same rules as those for able bodied players.

In each of these endeavors, as a non profit organization Newport upholds and supports personal dignity and respect for all involved, residents, participants, staff members, and our many volunteers. Wherever we are, we aim and work to create and uphold the best in community life.
